Take this summer a sizzler with these hot outdoor entertaining ideas. Invite the neighbourhood and throw the ultimate summer get-together.
1 Backyard barbie
Is there anything more quintessentially as a backyard BBQ? Surely not. But before you wheel out the rusty barbie and charocoal a few snags, consider supersizing your outdoor space. Upgrade to a custom outdoor kitchen, complete with suped-up barbecue, sink, lighting, bar fridge, and any other extra touches to make your BBQ the event of the season.
2 Get lucky
Who wants to slave away in the kitchen on a hot summer’s day? If you’d rather be chilling than cooking, why not host a potluck? Each guest brings a delicious meal, drinks, or snacks, to create a medley of outdoor dining delights.
3 Keep the kids happy
If your guests will include little ones, you’ll want to think of ways to keep them entertained – and out of the heat. No room or budget for a swimming pool? Then head to the nearest toy shop and pick up a paddling pool, sandpit, or water slide. You could even make a water balloon piñata, complete with a plastic bat, so kids can have fun while moving and keeping cool. Fill the yard with games and toys, so kids of all ages have a ball.
4 A themed affair
Have fun planning your backyard soiree by setting a theme. A beach theme is an easy and popular option. You can pop drinks in colourful eskies, serve fruity drinks with parasols, and even pop snacks into kiddy sand buckets with spades as servers.
5 Fire and ice
While the barbie is cranking up, keep guests cool by making ice shot glasses. Buy a mold from a homewares shop and freeze water into a set of shot glasses.
6 Make your own burgers
Give guests the choice to dress their own burgers by providing a burger bar. Prepare chopped vegetables, a range of meats (and portabello mushrooms or patties for vegetarians), a selection of sauces and condiments, and even different burger buns. Just be sure to keep plenty of ingredients on hand for seconds!
7 Keep bugs at bay
Flies and mozzies can ruin any well-intentioned backyard bash. Beat them to the punch by providing plenty of options for keeping bugs at bay.
You could set up a spray station, so guests can lather on the repellent throughout the day and night. Pop citronella candles into jars for a pretty and practical table setting. Turn on a few fans to keep flying insects from getting too close to the action. Or drain and clear any water sources, as mozzies love to linger around standing water.
